It is a common practice these days that restaurants, take aways and butcheries use fake or photo copied Halaal certificates which is fraud. In Botswana we have one recognized Halaal body which is the Botswana Halaal Trust who are very strict and also thorough in its effort in certifying businesses Halaal.

We were at a take away the other day (wont mention its name) were we inquired from one of the staff if they were certified Halaal to which she said they were. When i requested a certificate she said she was going to call her manager. After a long wait the manager comes out of his office with a black & white version the BHT certificate and according to him they only sell chicken so how could they not be Halaal.

Numerous such incidents ocurr especially when we are really cautious about Halaal which we should be. The logo on top is that of the BHT and we in Botswana should make sure this is what we see in every store before we decide to eat there. Along with the logo the certificate should also state what products are being certified e.g chicken, beef, lamb etc. and the validity should also be checked. Lastly you should confirm that the name on the certificate corresponde with that of the place you are at, meaning if you at Nandos the name should be Nandos and nothing else.
